Magnitude 6 quake jolts Catanduanes

MANILA, Philippines — Three earthquakes, one with a magnitude of six, struck Catanduanes yesterday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor occurred at about 2:19 p.m.

The  epicenter  of the quake was located 69 kilometers north of Pandan town.

Phivolcs said the quake, which had a depth of 21 kms, was caused by the movement of the Philippine Trench north of Catanduanes and east of Aurora.

The quake was felt at Intensity 4 in Irosin, Sorsogon and Legazpi and Ligao in Albay.

It was felt at Intensity 3 in Obando, Bulacan and Intensity 2 in Quezon City and Masbate City.

A magnitude 4.6 quake also jolted Catanduanes at around 10:18 a.m.

The epicenter of the tremor, which had a depth of 39 kms, was located 19 kms southeast of Baras town.

The quake was felt at Intensity 2 in Sorsogon City.

Another quake with a magnitude of 2.2 occurred at about 10:36 a.m. Its epicenter was traced 23 kms south of Baras town.

Phivolcs said no damage was expected from the quake, but warned the public against aftershocks.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management  Council urged concerned agencies to monitor affected areas.
