Fairview police chief sacked for drugs

Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The commander of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Station 5 in Fairview was relieved from his post yesterday after one of his men tested positive for shabu.

Superintendent Tomas Nuñez was sacked by QCPD director Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar for command responsibility.

Nuñez’s relief came after Police Officer 1 Gabby Bulan, a member of the station’s drug enforcement unit, tested positive for drug use.

Eleazar also relieved Bulan’s immediate superior, Senior Inspector Danilo Songalia.

“Their relief is part of the one-strike policy for police commanders found remiss in their duties,” the QCPD chief said.

Eleazar said police chiefs should conduct regular surprise drug tests of policemen in their jurisdictions.

Of the 331 QCPD personnel who underwent drug testing on Feb. 19, Bulan was the only one who tested positive for shabu.

Bulan denied he was a drug user. But the results of the initial and confirmatory tests proved otherwise.

Eleazar said Bulan could challenge the results of the drug testing during the hearing of his administrative case.

Bulan will be dismissed from the police service if found guilty of grave misconduct.
