Cop tagged in teen’s death surrenders

MANILA, Philippines — A policeman accused of firing a gun and accidentally killing a 13-year-old boy in Tondo on Friday night showed up at the Manila Police District (MPD) headquarters Sunday afternoon.

Police Officer 2 Omar Malinao Formentera, detailed at the Smokey Mountain police community precinct, was accompanied by precinct commander Senior Inspector Dave Abarra when he submitted his service pistol to determine if the bullet that killed Aldrine Pineda came from his gun.

Formentera was one of the police officers guarding the slaughterhouse in Vitas, Tondo when two men arrived and started teasing the lawmen with a flashlight.

Pineda, who was sitting with his playmates on a concrete fence, was hit in the stomach after a shot rang out.

The boy was taken to a hospital but died several hours later while being treated.

There were reports that Formentera slipped and accidentally pulled the trigger.

Chief Inspector Rommel Anicete, MPD homicide chief, said Formentera is not yet considered a suspect pending the result of the ballistics examination.
