12 hurt as truck falls off cliff

ZAMBOANGA CITY  , Philippines  —  Eleven Marine troopers and an elementary school principal were injured when a military truck fell into a ravine in this city on Saturday afternoon.

The truck came from an outreach mission when it figured in the accident in Barangay Salaan shortly before 3 p.m., according to Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office 9.

Reports said that personnel of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 1 and a team from ABS-CBN’s local television station conducted a medical mission at the Baluno Elementary School in Sitio Baluno.

On their way back to the city, school principal Joseph Naro Abalo rode the military truck, which trailed the vehicle of the ABS-CBN.

The truck reportedly developed engine trouble as it was travelling down the road in Sitio Lugakit, causing its driver to lose control of the wheel.

Although injured, some soldiers managed to rescue their companions.

The victims were initially treated at a hospital in nearby Barangay Pasobolong and then transferred to Camp Navarro General Hospital.
