3 Manila traffic enforcers nabbed for extortion

The three Manila traffic enforcers were arrested following complaints that they extorted money from motorists.

Three traffic enforcers were arrested by police Wednesday night for allegedly extorting money from motorists in Manila.

They were identified as Adrianne Halili, 25, and Salvador Ignacio, 42, both of the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau; and Leonardo Adrales, 50, a barangay traffic enforcer who misrepresented himself as an MTPB officer.

Superintendent Amante Daro, Manila Police District Station 11 commander, said that the suspects had apprehended motorists at the corner of Benavidez street and C.M. Recto Avenue.

One incident was recorded on a mobile phone by a resident who had been observing the three enforcers, Daro said.

One of the complainants, a taxi driver, said he was asked to shell out P500 in exchange for not being issued a ticket, according to Daro.

The driver haggled and Halili settled for P50, he added.

Ignacio and Salvador denied that they were involved in the extortion, while Halili admitted receiving the money.

MTPB chief Dennis Alcoreza said they have filed charges against the three and will make sure that they never work as traffic enforcers again.
