Bomb scare prompts brief evacuation of Cebu City hall

Cebu City Hall employees return to their offices after Councilor Tumulak declares area cleared from bomb threat. The Freeman/Jean Demecillo

MANILA, Philippines — Cebu police on Thursday cleared three buildings after bomb threats were sent to city officials that morning.

According to reports by The Freeman, city officials and City Hall staff received text messages claiming bombs would explode at the city hall, La Nueva Supermart and the Basilica Minore Del Santo Niño at 11:30 a.m.

The threat prompted the evacuation of city hall and the deployment of a police Special Weapons and Tactics team to check for bombs. Police found none and the threat was declared a hoax by a little past noon.

Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak said it would be difficult to trace who sent the text messages, which were received around 10 a.m., because messages were sent through a prepaid account and can no longer be reached. He also wondered why the sender had the numbers of city officials and employees.
