MANILA, Philippines — More than 100 workers were injured in a factory fire at the Cavite Export Processing Zone in Gen. Trias, Cavite that started early Wednesday evening.
According to Senior Superintendent Sergio Soriano Jr. of the Bureau of Fire Protection, the fire started at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday and was caused by a power saw in the factory. The fire spread quickly because of flammable materials in the factory.
In a phone interview with CNN Philippines, Soriano said that while the fire is still ongoing, they had already declared the fire under control at about 12:20 a.m.
Soriano added that once the situation has been declared as "fire out," they will start the investigation and mapping operations.
Cavite Gov. Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla, meanwhile, told PTV that local government units are ready to extend their help to the victims of the fire.
He added that the the HTI was not inspected by city hall or by the local BFP because the Philippine Economic Zone Authority has jurisdiction over the area.
About 35 fire trucks responded to the fire, which reached Task Force Delta.
The Philippine Red Cross meanwhile, noted that as of 1:10 a.m., a total of 155 people who were injured were brought to hospitals.
