Fisherfolk support danggit fishing ban in Palawan
MANILA, Philippines – Fisherfolk groups in coastal towns in Palawan have expressed support for a monthly closed season on rabbitfish or danggit.
The declaration of support came after the recent launch of community-level fisheries improvement plans, which were formulated in coordination with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and funding support from the Italian government.
FAO representative Jose Luis Fernandez said support for the fishing ban is a demonstration of the fisherfolk’s commitment to address overfishing and marine habitat loss, which also affect their livelihood.
Fishermen reported declining catch as the demand for dried danggit increased in the last decade.
Concerned local government units were expected to pass ordinances regulating danggit fishing. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council will also prepare the timetable of the closed season.
