PDEA burns P14-M marijuana plants in Benguet

As some sectors advocate for the legalization of marijuana in medical practice, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency continues its drive to destroy marijuana plantations in the country. 

MANILA, Philippines — Authorities destroyed around P14-million worth of grown marijuana plants and seedlings during a two-day operation in Benguet, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said on Tuesday. 

PDEA Director General Arturo Cacdac Jr. said the teams, composed of operatives from PDEA-Cordillera Administrative Region and local police staged a marijuana eradication last August 19 and August 20 in sitios Nakneng, Balisaosao and Tamurong in Barangay Kayapa, Bakun, Benguet.

He said the teams confiscated and destroyed a total of 63,000 full-grown marijuana plants, 10,000 dried marijuana stalks and 17,300 marijuana seedlings.

No marijuana cultivator was arrested during the two-day operation, the PDEA chief said.

Operatives the destroyed and burned the marijuana plants which were uprooted from a plantation site with an estimated total land area of 10,949 square meters.
