No firecracker-related injuries in Zamboanga
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines- The police and health centers in Zamboanga City recorded zero firecracker casualty, the first time here as the city welcomed New Year’s celebration with an absolute ban on firecrackers.
Police authorities also noted no single bullet were fired with the strict orders on its personnel and service and an appeal on private gun holders from firing their guns in welcoming 2014.
City Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco Salazar issued an executive order banning the sale, display, distribution and use of all forms of firecrackers and pyrotechnic device following the recommendation of the City Council citing the traumatic experience of the residents on the Sept. 9 siege of the Moro National Liberation Front members under Misuari-faction.
The police and medical officials said with the zero casualties on firecracker-related injury they highly recommend to continue the total ban of the firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.
“That makes not only the city health office but also the Department of Health (DOH) happy and this should be replicated all over the Philippines,†City Health Officer Dr. Rodelyn Agbulos said.
He said the residents were also aware of the ‘Iwas paputok’ campaign of the DOH.
He said, however, that a number who made last-minute peddling of firecrackers were arrested.
Police Superintendent Diomarie Albarico, deputy city police director, said since the Christmas and until the New Year’s celebration, there has been no single report of victim of firecracker in this city.
“The point here is the declaration of the firecracker and pyrotechnic ban,†Albarico said.
He said with the positive result, it will be good that the ban on the firecracker will continue.
He said the ban on the firecracker gave also positive effect on the implementation of the illegal discharge of firearms as any firing of gun will be easily noticed.
