PNP nab 58 gun ban violators

MANILA, Philippines - A total of 58 persons have been arrested by authorities in connection with the nationwide Commission on Election gun ban for the October 28 barangay polls, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Wednesday.

The gun ban violators were apprehended since the start of the election period last September 28. It will last until Nov. 12.
 
Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor, spokesperson to the PNP chief, said that of the figure, 54 were civilian, two were policemen, a security and a government official.
 
Under the gun ban rule, violators will be jailed from one to six years, permanent disqualification from holding public office, and stripped of their right to vote.
 
Mayor said authorities have also has seized 46 firearms, three airguns and firearm replicas, 19 bladed weapons, three grenades and 477 rounds of ammunition.
 
Comelec Resolution No. 9735 provides the gun owners who were given exemption during the May 13 elections will enjoy the privilege of carrying their guns outside of their residence during the conduct of the barangay elections without renewing their permits.
 
However, the resolution provides that "approved applications for employment/availment/engagement of security personnel/agencies during the May 13, 2013 National and Local Elections will be subjected to renewal for purposes of the October 28, 2013 Barangay Elections."
