Daraga kicks off Cagsawa Festival

Celso Amo, Cecille Suerte Felipe - The Philippine Star

DARAGA, Albay, Philippines – This historic town kicked off yesterday its month-long Cagsawa Festival at the Cagsawa Ruins as a reminder of Mayon volcano’s most violent eruption on Feb. 1, 1814 that buried the Franciscan built-church.

The festival started with a morning Mass at the Cagsawa Park by Fr. John Mendosa to thank God’s blessings and to appease the souls of some 1,200 villagers buried alive in the 1814 Mayon eruption as well as the 148 dead and 207 missing in Barangay Busay when super typhoon “Reming” devastated Albay in November 2006.
