Another vintage bomb found in Mindoro village

BAGUIO CITY — Another World War II bomb was found in Mindoro village on Sunday and was immediately brought to a safer ground by the military.

A farmer in sitio Maasin, Poblacion 9, Mamburao, Mindoro Occidental found the rocket-type vintage bomb while plowing the field, said Army Lt. Col. Elmer Quiros, commander of the 80th Infantry Battalion based in the province.

Quiros said in a telephone interview that Alberto Valentine discovered the bomb measuring about 32 inches in length and four inches in diameter.

The startled farmer reported his find to the military, prompting Quiros to dispatch a team of bomb experts from the 80th Infantry Battalion led by Private First Class Rino Aganap to the village to dispose the bomb.

Quiros explained that Japanese Imperial Army Major Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita and his forces once controlled the village and were holed up here by US and Filipino resistance forces during World War II.

At least three vintage bombs were found by the villagers in the town this year.
