LRA records officer slain

CALAMBA CITY — Two motorcycle-riding men pumped eight bullets into the body of a records officer of the Land Registration Authority (LRA) while he was on his way to his office here yesterday morning.

Although they still have no solid clues, police are exploring whether the killing of Josefino Maquinay, 53, LRA records officer III and a resident of Carmona, Cavite, could be work-related.

Senior Superintendent Alberto Garcia, city police chief, said Maquinay was getting a gallon of mineral water from the compartment of his Honda Civic when two men riding tandem on a motorcycle shot him from behind.

Maquinay had parked his car in front of the registry of deeds office along J.P. Rizal street here when he was attacked at about 9:05 a.m.

Police found nine empty 9-mm shells at the crime scene.

Lito Maquinay, the victim’s cousin, told The STAR that he overheard Josefino’s wife Remy as saying that her husband had been receiving death threats.

Also quoting Remy, Lito said his cousin’s killing could be work-related, explaining that he (Josefino) could have refused someone who wanted a land problem fixed.

Maquinay was said to have been a political leader of Cavite Gov. Ayong Maliksi since 1996. — with Arnell Ozaeta
