PDEA to probe extortion claims

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) will look into allegations that its operatives, or men pretending be, are involved in extortion activities in Taguig City, an official said yesterday.

PDEA director general Aaron Aquino said they are working on identifying the men wearing PDEA uniforms who were able to elude arrest during a chase with police officers in Barangay Ususan last Sunday.

Taguig police said the suspects, allegedly belonging to a drug group, would kidnap persons they would identify as drug suspects and demand money for their release.

The Southern Police District reported that based on information from officers of Barangay Ususan, two suspicious vehicles were spotted with seven men inside - some of them carrying long firearms – at the corner of Tomasa Avenue and General Luna street at around 6:45 p.m. Sunday.

When police proceeded to the scene, a man wearing a shirt with the PDEA logo got off one of the vehicles and introduced himself as PDEA agent. He quickly returned to the vehicle and both the Mitsubishi Montero and the Toyota Hi-Lux suddenly sped off towards Makati.

Around two hours after, Makati City police found the Toyota Hilux abandoned at the corner of Lansones and Mabolo streets in Barangay Comembo.
