MMDA renovates Gwapotel

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has started renovating its Gwapotel workers’ inn in Manila’s Port Area to boost occupancy rates.

MMDA personnel are repainting the budget inn’s bunker beds, general manager Thomas Orbos said yesterday.

While it is not part of the MMDA’s mandate, Orbos said maintaining and operating the inn is part of the agency’s public service to workers and students who reside on the outskirts of Metro Manila.

The workers’ inn posted net earnings of P1.4 million from January to June. Its occupancy rate consistently increased within two weeks after it was given proper attention, he said.

An average of over 400 guests stayed at the Gwapotel last month, the MMDA said.

The inn has provided safe and decent 12-hour lodging with free shower for workers, students, and travelers for P50. There are over 20 food stalls located at the ground floor of the inn.

The Gwapotel opened in May 2007.
