LTFRB probes GrabBike operations

MANILA, Philippines – The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is investigating the continued operation of GrabBike despite an order from the LTFRB for Grab to shut down the service, an official said yesterday.

“I was informed yesterday we’ve also seen yung application that can be downloaded from the link that they provided,” LTFRB Chairman Winston Ginez said.

He said the board will call the attention of the Grab, formerly known as GrabCar, to explain the difference between the old and new GrabBike service it is offering.

Reports said that GrabBike has sent text messages through Globe allegedly offering services despite the LTFRB’s cease and desist order.

“We are looking into the persons or company behind it. If it is the same company that was summoned before, then definitely the ruling still stands,” Ginez said.

The LTFRB stopped the GrabBike service early this year, saying it was not allowed under the certificate of accreditation granted to Grab.

“Insofar as operation of motorcycle as public utility vehicle, there is already a memorandum from (the Department of Transportation and Communications) addressed to LTFRB that we should not grant it on the ground that it is an unsafe motor vehicle to be used for public transport,” Ginez said.
