Terminated workers 'unnecessary' - CAAP

MANILA, Philippines - The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said yesterday its effort to eliminate redundant and unnecessary staff in the country’s 84 domestic and international airports will not affect utility workers and maintenance personnel needed to keep the airports clean and running efficiently.

CAAP director general Ramon Gutierrez said he has already assured the Philippine Airport Managers Association   that janitors and utility workers in their airports will not be affected by their airport personnel rationalization project.

“We have already assured them that they will be the ones to decide on who are needed and those who are not needed,” Gutierrez told The STAR.

Gutierrez said the CAAP will mostly copy the system at the Manila International Airport Authority, wherein clerical staff such as data encoders and other office workers, and janitorial and maintenance staff will be out-sourced to third party service providers.

CAAP sources earlier told The STAR that there were concerns among airport officers about the move of the authority to terminate last June 30 the service contracts of job order or contractual employees, led by utility workers and maintenance personnel.
