Anti-carnapping operatives of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) intercepted a passenger jeepney transporting 100 native dogs on the way to slaughter houses in Baguio City, shortly before dawn yesterday at the corner of EDSA and Kamuning Road.
Senior Superintendent Magtanggol Gatdula, QCPD chief said two suspects Ramon Manalo and Wison Pascual were arrested and charged with the violation of the law against cruelty to animals.
He said the transport of the dogs which originated from various towns in Batangas were monitored by a non-government organization that provided the information to the police.
The Quezon City policemen led by Inspector Angelo Nicolas also recovered last January some 102 dogs along EDSA. The dogs were also on the way to Baguio City.
In the latest dog rescue, police intercepted the suspects’ vehicle after members of the animal rights group Network Animals followed the suspects from Batangas then reported the illegal operation to the Quezon City police.
The transport of dogs for slaughter is punishable under Republic Act 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act which criminalize the slaughter of dogs and other animals classified as companion animals. – Perseus Echeminada
