1 dead in ice cream turf war

An ice cream vendor stabbed another Friday night in Navotas in what police said was a fight over turf.

Police Officer 1 Joseph Provido, the officer-on-case, identified the victim was Jardolito Damayo, 47, a resident of Kaunlaran Village in Navotas.

Provido said the suspect, identified only as "Jay Jay," an ice cream vendor of Winner Ice Cream, based in Barangay North Bay Boulevard South, Navotas.

"The world is not big enough for the both of us," the suspect was overheard before fleeing the scene.

According to the police, Damayo was doing his daily rounds in the area between the Sto. Nino Chapel and a mini wet market at Sitio Sto. Niño in Barangay North Bay Boulevard South at around 7:30 Friday night.

Armed with a knife, the suspect sneaked up on Damayo and stabbed the victim once in the back.

Damayo was taken by a passerby to the Tondo Medical Center for treatment.

The police gathered that prior to the incident, Damayo and the suspect have argued in the past over the area they were covering. The suspect felt Damayo was encroaching on his territory and minced no words he did not want to ply his ice cream there.

Damayo was a newcomer in the area and was apparently causing a big dent on the suspect’s daily earnings. – With Ian Estrada
