Christmas tragedy at city jail

Despondent over the possibility that no one would visit him on Christmas Day, a 26-year-old inmate of the Manila City Jail hanged himself inside the jail’s comfort room the other day.

The homicide section of the Western Police District identified the victim as Erick Foz, of San Jose, Del Monte, Bulacan.

According to police, Fox was sent to jail ast Jan.15 after he was arrested for theft. He was not able to post bail.

Police investigators said Foz was last seen by his fellow inmates entering the comfort room at about 3 a.m.

After 30 minutes, some of his cellmates became suspicious when Foz did not return.

When Foz did not respond, after repeated knocks on the door, the inmates then forced it open.

The shocked inmates saw Foz hanging from an iron grill with a leather belt around his neck. Foz was rushed to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center in Sta. Cruz, Manila, but was declared dead on arrival.

The victim’s cellmates told police that Foz had been acting strange in the last few days, often complaining that nobody had visited him since he was jailed. – Mike Frialde
