Hospital death leap

An alleged drug-crazed man tried to commit suicide by jumping off the rooftop of a hospital in Tondo, Manila with his six-year-old son on Sunday night.

He survived, but the boy didn’t.

Homicide detectives of the Western Police District said Edgardo Ramos, 34, of Prado Siongco, Lubao, Pampanga, sneaked into the Ospital ng Tondo in Abad Santos, Tondo at about 7:50 p.m. with his son Glarian Nikki.

Later, shocked witnesses saw Edgardo leaping from the rooftop of the hospital with his son. They landed on the rooftops of adjacent houses.

Police said Ramos survived the five-story fall with only minor injuries. Unfortunately, his son died on the spot due to various injuries in the head and body.

Ramos who is now detained at the WPD-Station 7 spoke incoherently and appeared to be high on drugs, according to homicide section head, Chief Inspector Juanito Taluban.

"We are having a hard time determining what drove him to jump off the hospital’s rooftop as he was speaking incoherently," Taluban said.

He said Ramos was not confined at the hospital at the time of the incident.

"We are wondering how he was able to sneak into the hospital and able climb to the hospital’s rooftop without being stopped by the security guards," Taluban said.

Police are also checking whether or not Ramos really meant to take his own life.

"We are still checking if he really jumped off the roof or just slipped and fell while throwing his son," said Taluban.
