Binay lashes out at running priest

Makati City mayoral candidate Jejomar Binay lashed out at the University of the Philippines (UP) parish priest Fr. Robert Reyes for being "uncharitable and un-Christian" in his campaigns against the so-called political families.

Binay, in a statement, took offense at the running priest’s remarks about his family as well an the other political families for their supposed participation in the rallies held by the supporters of deposed President Joseph Estrada at the EDSA Shrine and Mendiola.

"As a man of cloth, Fr. Reyes should be more circumspect in laying blame for the unfortunate violence last May 1 on certain political families, my family included," Binay said.

Binay was one of the prominent politicians implicated for the deployment of people to the pro-Estrada rallies which culminated in a huge riot at Mendiola where scores were injured.

The priest was accused of alienating the poor from the Catholic Church and widening the rift between the affluent and poor sectors of society.

He added that Reyes had no right to place any judgment on his character by using political affiliations as the only basis. – Marvin Sy
