CEBU, Philippines - A measure that will establish a sports academy and training center in Talisay City has been approved at the committee level of the Senate.

This was according to Cebu first district Rep. Gerald Anthony "Samsam" Gullas.

The congressman seeks to establish the sports academy and training center which will be constituted as the primary sports development and training center for athletes, coaches and other sports personnel in Cebu and other parts of Central Visayas.

Gullas said he received a positive response from Senate Committee on Games, Amusements and Sports chaired by Senator Sonny Angara.

Talisay City Councilor Valeriano Ylanan and Mayor Johnny De los Reyes' executive secretary Pastor Paypa, who were present in the hearing, posed no objection during the committee hearing conducted in Manila recently.

Gullas added that the House of Representatives already approved his bill on third and final reading.

Gullas said the center will be located in an area in Talisay where considerable development in facilities is already in place.

"In the continued pursuit for excellence by the Cebuanos in the field of sports competition, the establishment of the Talisay Sports Academy and Training Center will  provide the necessary physical facilities and the provision of expert training resources in the various disciplines," Gullas said in his bill.

Gullas is hopeful that his measure will get support from the plenary of the senate as he believes that with the establishment of the sports academy, the sportsmen in the region will have a venue to develop their skills and to bring honor to the region in the national and international competitions.  (FREEMAN)
