Talisay SP approves measure that controls transport of "lechon"

- Garry B. Lao - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City council approved the resolution for the strict implementation of the “no meat inspection certificate” and “no transport clearance” policy especially on roasted pig, or “lechon,” dealers.

Lechon from Talisay City is popular in Manila.

But during yesterday’s council session, opposition Councilor Romeo Villarante said “lechon” dealers and businessmen should first be consulted on the move considering that it has a great effect on their business.

Lechon from Talisay is known for its tastiness and crispy skin that don’t need sauce to perk up its herb-enhanced flavors.

Councilor Edward Alesna, who chairs the committee on market and slaughterhouse, endorsed a resolution in the council urging the Regional Quarantine Department to strictly implement the “no meat inspection certificate” and “no transport clearance” policy especially on lechon that are transported to Metro Manila from Talisay City.

Alesna said the meat and meat products that are transported from one region to another must come only from “Double A” or “Triple A” accredited slaughterhouses.

“Na-obserbahan man gyud nato nga daghang businessmen nga wala manglukat og clearance inig deliver nila sa ilang lechon outside Talisay City,” Alesna said.

Alesna wants the Regional Quarantine Office, through   Regional Quarantine Officer, Dr. Pablo Balite, can help the local government unit put the illegal shipment of “lechon” to Metro Manila to an end.

Villarante, however, said that while it is only a resolution, it has an implication on lechon traders.

Villarante said that consultation should first be conducted before approving a resolution so that “lechon” dealers will not be caught off-guard.  - THE FREEMAN
