12 travel hacks for the smart traveler

MANILA, Philippines — With traveling being a favorite pastime of Filipinos (and everyone else around the world), knowing how to make your vacation more fun, productive and comfortable is of utmost importance.

Here are practical travel hacks that every smart traveler should know:

When booking

1. Mix and match. Check all available airlines (online and offline) and compute if booking two one-way tickets will come out cheaper than booking a round trip ticket.

2. Look up Code Shares.  This is beneficial if you're a frequent flyer or if you're going on a long haul flight and trying to rack up air miles.

3. Get travel insurance. You'll never know when it'll come in handy.

When packing

4. Roll instead of fold. Yes, this age-old tip really works.

5. Bring an extra bar of soap to put inside your dirty laundry bag to keep your suitcase from stinking the entire trip.

6. Put all your power cords and adaptors in a sunglass case and use pill containers or resealable sandwich bags for your jewelry and accessories. Neat, orderly and easy to locate!

When on board the plane

7. Apply night moisturizer before going on a long haul flight to keep your skin hydrated.

8. If you have trouble sleeping, ask your flight attendant for a beverage list.  Drinking something (alcoholic or otherwise) will help lull you to sleep.

9. Go to the toilet before you hear the pilot's final approach announcement to avoid the long queue.

When you arrive

10. If you forgot to go to the bathroom before deplaning, head straight to the second (onwards) airport toilets. Because everyone will go to the first.

11. Look for your assigned baggage carousel immediately and don't dilly-dally. Some airports are confusing, especially the international hubs.

12. Go past the currency exchange counters at the airport.  You'll be better off getting local currency at an ATM or elsewhere in your destination.
