FOS and a healthy dog

MANILA, Philippines - Eukanuba, the premium dog food brand, has added Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) — a natural prebiotic that helps improve digestion — to its dog nutrition product range.

Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that selectively stimulate a particular type of bacteria in the colon, improving a dog’s immunity and overall health. Besides assisting with food intolerance, bowel pH and intestinal regularity, external studies have demonstrated the positive effects of prebiotics on calcium absorption, which in turn leads to increased bone mineral density.

Almost 70 percent of a dogs’ immune system is in its digestive tract. FOS works by stimulating the optimal balance of good bacteria growth with a reduction of bad bacteria. It feeds and stimulates the growth of good bacteria, which then crowds out the bad bacteria in the digestive tract, thereby strengthening the dog’s natural defences.

Amy Dicke, DVM, technical services veterinarian at P&G Pet Care, said, “FOS is one of only two types of prebiotics that aids digestion and lessens the occurrence of diarrhea. The quality and strength of FOS used in Eukanuba, combined with beet pulp, increases the weight and length of the small intestine, improving the absorption of much needed nutrients and minerals such as calcium and magnesium which improves bone density.”

Dr. Dicke said that Eukanuba is the first dog food brand to introduce FOS.

Eukanuba products with Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are available at all pet shops.
