Orchid Society celebrates 64th year with a garden show

MANILA, Philippines - In celebration of its 64th anniversary as the premier orchid club in the country, the Philippine Orchid Society (POS) will hold its Mid-Year Orchid and Garden Show from Aug. 13 to 23 at the Manila Seedling Bank compound in QC.

This year’s theme is “Protecting Our Orchids from Climate Change.” It will focus on the conservation and protection of our Philippine orchid species.

The show will feature the best orchid blooms of the season set in landscaped exhibits executed by the country’s top orchid collectors and landscapers. Find out who will be named the “Best Orchid in Show” and the “Best Orchid Landscape.” The best orchid species will receive a special award.

The Floral Designers’ Circle of the Philippines will put up a floral display using orchids as their focal point. There will also be a garden trade fair for those who wish to buy orchids, ornamentals, and garden supplies directly from the producers themselves. Entrance fee is P30 and P20 for students and senior citizens with valid IDs.

Free lectures on orchid growing and gardening will be held every day at 2 p.m. for the visiting public. Topics are as follows: “Annuals Ornamental Production” by East West Seed Company, Aug. 13; “Growing Cattleya & Oncidium Orchids” by Atty. Hernando Perez, Aug. 14; “Orchid Flower Arrangement” by Floral Designer’s Circle, Aug. 15; “Miniature Tray Landscape-Penjing” by Vic de Roña, Aug. 16; “Growing Vandaceous and Phalaenopsis Orchids” by CV Lazaro, Aug. 17; “Noteworthy Philippine Orchid Species” by Wally Suarez, Aug. 18; “Orchid Potting Techniques” by Andres Golamco Jr., Aug. 19; “Fertilization & Urban Gardening” by Allied Botanical Corporation, Aug. 20; “Marketing Trends in the Ornamental Plant Industry” by Vangie Go, Aug. 21; “Indoor Gardening for a Healthy Lifestyle” by Serapion Metilla, Aug. 22; and “Controlling Orchid Pest and Diseases” by Norberto Bautista, Aug. 23.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Orchid Society bagged three major awards in the just concluded International Orchid Show of the Orchid Society East Asia (OSSEA) in Singapore.

The exhibiting team headed by Evangeline Go and Atty. Rudy Sanidad won first place in the Orchid Landscape Exhibit (10 square meters category); first place in the Best Orchid Species Category; and the Reserved Champion Award for the Best orchid in the show.
