Super Typhoon Uwan makes landfall in Aurora

MANILA, Philippines (Updated 10:19 p.m.) — Super Typhoon "Uwan" (international name: Fung-Wong) made landfall over Dinalungan, Aurora at 9:10 p.m. on Sunday, November 9, state weather bureau PAGASA said. 

Prior to landfall, PAGASA’s 8 p.m. weather bulletin noted that the center of Uwan’s eye was spotted 125 kilometers northeast of Infanta, Quezon, or 85 kilometers east-southeast of Baler, Aurora. 

The typhoon carried maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour near the center, gusts of up to 230 kph and a central pressure of 935 hPa. It was moving northwestward at 30 kph.

Strong to typhoon-force winds extended as far as 900 kilometers from the center.

PAGASA warned that even areas outside the landfall zone may experience heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides. Strong to gale-force gusts are expected in the following areas: 

  • Sunday, November 9: Palawan, Visayas and Mindanao.
  • Monday, November 10: Most of Luzon and Visayas
  • Tuesday, November 11: Most of Luzon

Storm surge, sea conditions

The state weather bureau raised a high-risk warning for storm surges exceeding 3 meters in low-lying and exposed coastal areas, including the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, Bicol Region, most of MIMAROPA, Northern and Eastern Samar, Aklan, Antique, Guimaras, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Dinagat Islands, Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands and most of Zamboanga Peninsula. 

A gale warning is also in effect over the seaboards of Luzon, the eastern and central Visayas and the eastern seaboards of Mindanao. 

Sea conditions over the next 24 hours are expected to be very rough to extremely high in the following areas:

  • Up to 14 meters: Seaboards of Isabela, Aurora, Camarines Norte; northern and eastern Polillo Islands
  • Up to 12 meters: Northern and eastern seaboards of Camarines Sur and Catanduanes
  • Up to 10 meters: Seaboards of La Union and Pangasinan; eastern seaboard of mainland Cagayan
  • Up to 8 meters: Seaboards of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur; remaining seaboard of Cagayan including Babuyan Islands; eastern seaboard of northern and central mainland Quezon; remaining seaboard of Polillo Islands
  • Up to 7 meters: Seaboards of Batanes and Zambales; eastern seaboards of Albay and Sorsogon
  • Up to 5.5 meters: Seaboard of Marinduque; western seaboards of Lubang Islands and Bataan; northern and eastern seaboards of Northern Samar; northern seaboard of Eastern Samar; northern and western seaboards of mainland Masbate including Burias and Ticao Islands; remaining seaboards of Quezon, Camarines Sur, Albay, and Sorsogon

PAGASA warned that mariners of small vessels, including motorbancas, must not venture out to sea. All vessels are also advised to remain in port or seek safe harbor until conditions improve. 

Track, intensity

After hitting Aurora, the state weather bureau said that Uwan will cross the mountains of Northern Luzon, where it is expected to weaken but remain a typhoon.

By Monday morning, it may emerge over Lingayen Gulf or the waters off Pangasinan or La Union.

From Monday until Tuesday, November 11, Uwan will turn northward, still at typhoon strength.

It is expected to move toward Taiwan by Wednesday, November 12 and make landfall over western Taiwan on Thursday, November 13, before rapidly weakening over land.
