DOH: 5,835 leptospirosis cases recorded

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 5,835 cases of leptospirosis nationwide this year, with cases surging in the past two weeks amid heavy flooding.

The National Capital Region reported the highest number of cases with 1,733, followed by Central Luzon with 632 cases and Cagayan Valley with 561.

This latest DOH data is 19 percent lower compared to the 7,187 cases logged during the same reporting period last year.

DOH also noted a decrease in deaths from the 764 recorded in 2025 to this year’s 358.

Though the total number of cases is lower compared to what was recorded in 2025, the DOH reminded the public not to be complacent and avoid wading in floodwaters.

“Despite a low overall recorded number of cases this year, it was observed that there was a 29 percent increase in the case trend over the past two weeks,” Assistant Secretary Gerna Manatad of the DOH’s Epidemiology Bureau said.

“This means cases are most likely to go up due to habagat (monsoon), especially if people will not heed the advice of health officials, ” she said.

Manatad reminded those exposed to floodwaters to take a bath right away using soap and clean water.

“If you have wounds, proceed to the nearest health center and ask for medical assistance,” she said.

The DOH stressed the value of early consultation for proper assessment and prescription of prophylaxis.

Leptospirosis, which is caused by the bacteria leptospira, happens through direct contact with the urine of infected animals such as rats and pigs, or with a urine-contaminated environment such as floodwaters.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education ordered all public schools to step up the campaign against dengue and leptospirosis.

DepEd directed school heads, health personnel and staff to enforce strict sanitation standards and health monitoring for dengue and leptospirosis cases across public basic education institutions nationwide. — Bella Cariaso
