Palace declares May 27 holiday for Eid’l Adha

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang has declared May 27 as a regular holiday throughout the country for the observance of Eid’l Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice.
The declaration was made through Proclamation 1264, signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, by the authority of President Marcos, on Thursday.
Eid’l Adha is one of the two most important events in the Islamic calendar, following Eid’l Fitr or the Feast of Breaking the Fast.
The Commission on Muslim Filipinos has recommended that Eid’l Adha be observed on May 27 this year in accordance with the 1447 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar, according to Proclamation 1264.
Republic Act 9849 declared the 10th day of Zhul Hijja, the 12th month of the Islamic Calendar, a national holiday for the observance of Eid’l Adha, with a movable date.
Considered by Muslims as their most revered holiday, Eid’l Adha is universally celebrated by Muslim families to honor Prophet Ibrahim’s ultimate devotion and obedience to Allah. Ibrahim was willing to sacrifice his own son, Ishmael, before Allah provided a lamb to sacrifice instead.
The commemoration likewise marks the conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam.
