Protesters mourn death of motor taxi rider
MANILA, Philippines — Transport groups are mourning the death of a motorcycle taxi rider who died while waiting in line at a cash aid distribution center.
“We are disappointed because it feels like the transport sector is asking for alms for a small cost. We are burdened just for only P5,000,” Piston national president Mody Floranda said.
Manibela chairman Mar Valbuena echoed Floranda’s sentiment, noting that “the line is very long under the hot sun.”
“If the government is serious, they should direct (the cash aid) to local associations,” Floranda suggested.
Meanwhile, some schools are suspending face-to-face classes amid Piston and Manibela’s transport strike from April 21 to 23.
The Trinity University of Asia and University of the Philippines Integrated School announced suspensions, while UP Los Baños encouraged faculty members to extend consideration to students affected by the strike.
In Bulacan, the Calumpit Jeepney Operator and Drivers Association-Piston has decided to offer food and water to jeepney drivers instead of paralyzing routes. — Bella Cariaso, Ramon Efren Lazaro
