MANILA, Philippines — The president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Easter Sunday, April 5,  called on the faithful for a "deeper understanding" of peace amid a world increasingly fractured by violence and division.

In a message, CBCP President and Lipa Archbishop Gilbert Garcera delivered his Easter Message, expressing his hope that the spirit of Jesus Christ’s resurrection would bring about a reign of peace during this holy season.

However, he also expressed sadness over the persistent shadows of conflict that mar the global landscape. He specifically cited the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Russia, the volatility between Israel, the United States and Iran; and the humanitarian crises in Myanmar, Yemen, Sudan and beyond.

“But you know, it is so sad that in the midst of this celebration, this Easter Season, we experience war in Ukraine and Russia; Israel, United States (US) against Iran; Myanmar, Yemen, Sudan or maybe we say it’s also conflict within the family or maybe in communities,” Garcera said.

“The Spirit of Easter Sunday must be a moment for us to deepen our understanding of the gift of Jesus to us, which is peace,” he added.

The prelate also invoked the words of Pope Leo XIV, echoing the plea: "Let there be peace."

“What was the challenge of Pope Leo as we celebrate today Easter Sunday? Peace be with you. It is the power of the risen Christ. A peace that is unarmed, disarming, humble and persevering,” Garcera saud.

“A peace that comes from God. The god who loves us all unconditionally,” he added.
