MANILA, Philippines — A total of 244 overseas Filipino workers (OFW) and their families were repatriated from the Middle East on Good Friday amid the ongoing war between Israel and Iran.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on April 3 announced that the 244 OFWs and their children arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 from Saudi Arabia.

The OFWs were originally from Bahrain.

“Tatlong araw na paglalakbay ang isinagawa, crossing borders mula Bahrain patungong KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) via land travel hanggang sa pag sakay sa Gulf Air patungong Maynila,” the DMW said in a  statement.

(There were three days of travel done, crossing the border from Bahrain to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) via land travel until they boarded Gulf Air going to Manila.)

Prior to this, at least 10 other OFWs were repatriated from Lebanon via a Turkish flight on Thursday. One of the OFWs from this batch was a domestic helper whose employers left for France, abandoning them as tensions in the Middle East heightened.

Another batch of repatriations is expected within the day, the DMW said.

Tensions in the Middle East have been ongoing for nearly a month as the US and Israel strike Iran, with Tehran retaliating across the gulf nations. There are around 2 million Filipinos in the Middle East, with most of them being OFWs.
