NBI denies Defensor claim of detaining, torturing Zaldy Co aide

MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation on Monday rejected allegations by former Anakalusugan party-list representative Mike Defensor that the bureau detained and tortured the aide of former lawmaker Zaldy Co.
In its November 17 statement, the NBI said Defensor’s assertions were “unfounded,” “purely speculative,” and “unsupported by evidence.”
“No complaint, report, or medical record exists showing that Mr. Estrada or his wife suffered physical harm. There is no record of their custody under the NBI,” the agency said.
“We categorically condemn any false, malicious, or unverified statements intended to undermine the credibility and integrity of our institution. We reaffirm our commitment to transparency, due process, and the rule of law,” it added.
Claims tied to flood control controversy. Defensor had accused the NBI of assaulting and illegally detaining Co’s aide, John Paul Estrada, and Estrada’s wife before allegedly sending them to Chile to prevent them from testifying on the flood-control scandal.
He also claimed that the NBI provided the couple fake passports and flew them abroad.
The allegations followed Co’s claims that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and House Speaker Martin Romualdez directed him to insert P100 billion for public works in the national budget. Analysts and Congress leaders, however, have noted several inconsistencies in his statements.
NBI urges evidence, warns of possible charges
The NBI urged Defensor to “present verifiable evidence” and avoid hearsay if he plans to pursue the accusations.
“Should the evidence so warrant, the Bureau shall proceed with the appropriate investigative actions,” it said.
“Absent any credible proof, these allegations remain unfounded, cannot be given weight, and may even lead to prosecution for its malicious intent to undermine the credibility and integrity of the Bureau,” it added.
The bureau also said it is coordinating with the Bureau of Immigration concerning the Estrada couple’s whereabouts.
Two weeks ago, Defensor also claimed that Orly Guteza, a self-confessed member of Zaldy Co's security entourage, is under custody of the Philippine Marines. The Navy denied his claims.
