Easterlies to bring hot, humid weather nationwide

MANILA, Philippines — Severe Tropical Storm Opong has left the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) after making landfall in Vietnam, paving the way for the easterlies to prevail over the country, state weather forecasters said yesterday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the departure of Opong has weakened the southwest monsoon, leaving the easterlies – or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean – as the dominant weather system.

This shift is expected to bring generally fair and humid conditions nationwide, with only isolated rains and thunderstorms likely in the afternoon and evening.

In Luzon, peak temperatures may reach 34 degrees Celsius in Laoag and 33 degrees Celsius in Tuguegarao, while Metro Manila will range between 24 and 31 degrees Celsius. The Bicol Region, Central Luzon and Calabarzon may also see scattered rains due to the easterlies.

Visayas and Mindanao will likewise experience hot weather, with highs of up to 33 degrees Celsius in Davao. Localized thunderstorms may occur, particularly in the Zamboanga Peninsula, where rains could persist until tomorrow.

PAGASA is monitoring the possible development of another tropical cyclone that could affect Luzon by this week.
