Phivolcs: Russia quake poses no threat to Philippines

MANILA, Philippines — The magnitude 7.0 earthquake near the Kuril Islands in Russia poses no threat to the Philippines, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said yesterday.
“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” Phivolcs said in its advisory.
No further action is required from the public, the agency added.
The Kuril Islands, located in the far eastern region of Russia, form a volcanic archipelago that spans over 1,150 kilometers between Japan’s Hokkaido Island and Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.
It sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
