DA lifts max SRP for pork

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) has officially lifted the maximum suggested retail price (SRP) for pork following a request from industry stakeholders, amid continued disruptions in domestic pork supply caused by the resurgence of African swine fever (ASF).

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said that while stakeholders attempted to comply with the mandated pricing, the ongoing shortfall in local swine production, coupled with strong consumer demand, rendered it increasingly difficult to maintain stable retail prices.

He advised the public to consider more affordable protein options such as chicken, fish, beef or frozen pork, while the government finalizes measures aimed at stabilizing pork supply and prices in the coming weeks.

Prior to its withdrawal, the DA had pegged the maximum SRP for pork cuts at P380 per kilo for belly, P350 for pigue and shoulder and P300 for sabit-ulo or fresh carcass under a pricing agreement with industry players.

These rates were designed to balance fair market value across the supply chain and protect consumers from sharp markups.

Despite these measures, retail pork prices have continued to climb, with the ASF surge being cited as a major contributor to declining production.
