Philippines ‘disappointed’ with Timor-Leste on Teves case

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has expressed its disappointment over Timor-Leste’s rejection of its request to extradite expelled Negros Oriental congressman Arnolfo Teves Jr. who is facing multiple charges of murder and attempted murder.
Manila relayed its message to Dili through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) yesterday. It came on the heels of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla’s warning that Timor-Leste’s decision could jeopardize its application for membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The Philippines is preparing to appeal Timor-Leste’s denial of its request. Dili rejected the request for Teves’ extradition on grounds that he could face torture or inhumane treatment if returned to the Philippines.
“We are disappointed that Timor-Leste has not shown enough trust in the delivery of justice in the Philippines, a founding member of the ASEAN which it seeks to join, and among the very first ASEAN member states to convey support for its aspiration to join the association,” the DFA said in its statement.
Teves allegedly masterminded the assassination of former Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo in March 2023. Teves fled the country after being tagged as the prime suspect.
