Distinguished Aviation Cross awarded to fallen PAF pilots

MANILA, Philippines — As their remains arrived at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City yesterday afternoon, the two Philippine Air Force pilots who died in the crash of their FA-50 fighter jet in Bukidnon last week were posthumously awarded the Distinguished Aviation Cross in recognition of their heroism and sacrifice.
Solemn military honors for the two PAF officers – Maj. Jude Salang-Oy and 1st Lt. April John Dadulla – began at the Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro as their remains were loaded onto a C-130 aircraft that would take them to Villamor Air Base.
Special Assistant to the President Antonio Lagdameo Jr. represented President Marcos at the Villamor Air Base ceremonies.
Also present were Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr., Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. and PAF chief Lt. Gen. Arthur Cordura.
The Distinguished Aviation Cross is the highest honor for valor and exceptional contributions to military aviation.
“Their heroism in the face of danger reflects the very best of the Air Force’s values,” PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo said.
“The Philippine Air Force extends its deepest condolences to the families of Major Salang-Oy and First Lieutenant Dadulla. Their heroism serves as an inspiration to all members of the Philippine Air Force and to the Filipino people,” PAF’s statement read.
“As Guardians of the Skies, we will continue to honor their legacy by upholding the values of service, duty and sacrifice that they so valiantly embodied,” it added.
Vigil nights will be observed at Villamor Air Base and Basa Air Base to allow their fellow airmen to pay their respects, according to Castillo.
Interment details are still being finalized by their respective families.
