DOLE backs jeepney drivers’ regular employment

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is pushing for the regular employment status of jeepney drivers who will continue working under the jeepney modernization program.
“DOLE is supporting the modernization program so that our jeepney drivers can be treated like regular workers who have fixed salary rate and are covered by social benefits such as SSS and PhilHealth,” Labor Undersecretary Benjo Benavidez said in an interview.
He noted that DOLE will not issue new guidelines and instead will adopt the existing department order governing employment and working conditions of drivers and conductors in the public utility bus transport industry.
A 2012 department order issued by DOLE provides a fixed salary and benefits mandated by the Labor Code to bus drivers.
He added that DOLE has capacitated the Land Transport Franchising and Regulatory Board on the adoption of the same policy for jeepney drivers and operators.
