MANILA, Philippines — They may be a global craze, but artificial intelligence photo generator apps can pose security risks, according to Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, who issued an order prohibiting military and defense personnel from using the apps.

“All DND and AFP personnel are directed to refrain from using Al photo generator applications, and practice vigilance in sharing information online,” Teodoro said in a memorandum order to the Department of National Defense and Armed Forces dated Oct. 18.

He warned that AI apps can create fake profiles using photos collected from users of the apps. Such fake data and information can be used for scamming, identity theft, social engineering, phishing attacks and other criminal activities, even espionage.

“The online trending digital application that uses artificial intelligence, which requires its users to submit at least 10 photos of themselves to generate an enhanced portrait, poses significant privacy and security risks,” Teodoro said.

“This application compiles its users’ data and creates a digital person that mimics how a real individual speaks and moves,” he explained.

Teodoro said the collected photos can be used to create fake profiles that can lead to identity theft, social engineering, phishing attacks and other nefarious activities.

The defense chief said there have already been reports of such illegal activities.

“This seemingly harmless and amusing Al-powered application can be maliciously used,” he added.

Teodoro reminded DND and AFP personnel to make sure their actions “are aligned to the department’s values and are in adherence to existing policies.”
