Angkas aims to generate 1 million jobs

MANILA, Philippines — Homegrown motorcycle taxi app Angkas has put forth a proposal that can empower the 18 million motorcycle owners in the country to become ‘nanopreneurs’ or small business owners.

The Motorcycle Nanopreneur Digital Jobs Platform opens up new opportunities for motorcycle owners to utilize their vehicles for business ventures.

Angkas chief executive officer George Royeca served as one of Private Sector Advisory Council’s resource persons during the meeting, which was also attended by other PSAC proponents.

Inspired by Angkas’ proposal, the PSAC -Job Sector Group has taken the initiative to propose the establishment of a Motorcycle Micro Business Program, which aims to support and empower motorcycle owners who are keen on utilizing their motorcycles for business purposes. The support of PSAC-JSG members and drivers of MSME sector like Go Negosyo chair Joey Concepcion, is critical to the program’s success.

No less than President Marcos welcomed the proposal during a recent meeting with the PSAC-JSG last May 18, demonstrating the government’s efforts to strengthen public-private collaboration and help boost the country’s job generation. It has been the President’s top agenda to provide dignified jobs for the Filipino and the Motorcycle Micro Business Program is an avenue to make this happen.

The program seeks to empower the informal sector, specifically motorcycle nanopreneurs, by generating a million job opportunities for habal-habal riders while ensuring the highest safety standards. Additionally, the program addresses the financial exclusion of unbanked individuals by offering secure cash handling and easier motorcycle loans, promoting financial inclusion and providing safety and financial protection for riders and passengers alike.

Angkas CEO Royeca, who champions the informal worker, is grateful to Marcos for supporting the Motorcycle Micro Business Program. He hopes the President can fast-track the development and empowerment of the motorcycle nanopreneur.

“This progressive initiative backed by the PBBM administration, is set to generate over a million job opportunities and lift countless families out of poverty. Our focus transcends mere job creation; we are dedicated to cultivating a force of resilient nanopreneurs within the informal sector, especially among our dedicated motorcycle riders,” Royeca said.

“Utilizing our homegrown technological platforms, we aim to catapult the Philippines onto the global startup technology sector stage with an ambition extending beyond international recognition; as we aspire to foster a vibrant nation, brimming with innovative employers. We must foster a locally empowered, inclusive and sustainable economy that serves all Filipinos by Filipinos.”
