MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) leads 15 Philippine universities that made it to the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said there was a marked threefold increase in the number of ranked Philippine universities for this year.

ADMU was the top ranked Philippine higher education institution (HEI) with an overall score of 82.1-88.5, making it into the 101-200 rank.

De La Salle University and Mariano Marcos State University made it to the 601-800 rank.

Seven other state universities and colleges (SUCs) were also listed – Central Luzon State University, Tarlac Agricultural University, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, Visayas State University, Cebu Technological University and Tarlac State University.

Other universities in the list were the University of Santo Tomas, Mapua University, San Beda University, University of Asia and the Pacific and St. Paul University Philippines.

Universities must opt in to be included in the THE evaluation.

CHED Chairman Prospero de Vera said that this shows the growing internationalization campaign of Philippine HEIs in a bid to benchmark and compete with the best universities in the world.

“I am happy that the efforts and initiatives of Philippine universities to contribute to the attainment of the SDGs are now being recognized internationally. Their inclusion among the world’s best universities is an incentive to the HEIs’ efforts of improving their faculty profile, research, student and faculty exchanges and degree offerings,” he said in a statement.

The impact rankings are the only global performance tables that assess HEIs on their contributions and initiatives toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 2022 rankings assessed 1,406 universities from 106 countries/regions.

The ranking is calculated based on the university’s scores in the evaluation of the 17 UN SDGs based on the areas of research, stewardship, outreach andteaching.

Western Sydney University was the No. 1 HEI in the Impact Rankings, gaining an overall score of 99.1.
