MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang yesterday welcomed the eventual entry into the country of SpaceX Internet Service of billionaire Elon Musk, saying it would significantly improve internet service and stir more business activities.
“According to Secretary Ramon Lopez of the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry), preparations are now being made to register SpaceX as an internet provider in the Philippines,” acting deputy presidential spokesman Michel Kristian Ablan said at a press briefing.
“This is very good news because we’ll have faster broadband speed and our telecom services will have bigger capacity and, most of all, it will result in lower rates,” he said in Filipino and English.
Ablan said the Philippines is the first country in Southeast Asia to host SpaceX Internet Service.
Lopez on Thursday expressed hope SpaceX would enter the Philippine market as soon as possible. He said it is currently undertaking preparatory activities like site selection.
