MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Joel Villanueva tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday evening after experiencing fever and headaches earlier this week, according to a statement from his office.

He was referring to the results of his RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) test which he received yesterday.

"I informed all of the people I came in contact with about my situation. Right now, we are all isolating," the senator said in Filipino.

Villanueva, who chairs the higher education and labor committees, said that he is vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19, adding that he has strong faith that he will recover from the virus.

"I am one with the workers who are risking their lives to work in spite of the pandemic. You inspire me to keep supporting your welfare as a Senate employee," he said.

He is running for another term as senator in this year's national elections.

Villanueva earlier this week celebrated the birthday of his fellow senator Bato dela Rosa in-person, along with other senators including Partido Reporma presidential bet Panfilo "Ping" Lacson, Senate President Vicente "Tito" Sotto III, and Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri.
