MANILA, Philippines — Starting today, motorists can access the Sta. Monica-Lawton Bridge across Pasig River that also serves as a major component of the BGC-Ortigas Center Link Road Project.

The project is anticipated to decongest traffic on EDSA and C-5 and improve accessibility within the central business districts of Metro Manila, resulting in an estimated 20 percent reduction in vehicle volume on EDSA.

Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar said that the opening of the bridge to facilitate connectivity between Kalayaan Avenue, Makati City leading to Bonifacio Global City (BGC) Taguig City and Pasig City/ Mandaluyong City is in time for the commemoration of 123rd anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence.

“Sta. Monica-Lawton Bridge is a timely Independence Day gift of President Duterte to the general public who will be relieved from traffic congestion going in and out of Makati/ BGC Taguig and Pasig/ Mandaluyong City,” Villar said.

In just 12 minutes, the cities of Pasig and Mandaluyong can be reached from Kalayaan Avenue, Makati City and BGC, Taguig City via the Sta. Monica-Lawton Bridge.

The new bridge across Pasig River is a major component of the P1.79-billion BGC-Ortigas Center Link Road Project.

Aside from the construction of the bridge, the project also involves the rehabilitation and widening of the 476.58-meter stretch from Brixton (corner Reliance Street) to Fairlane Street and the 232.34-meter BGC 8th Avenue; construction of the 125-meter upward and downward ramps at Kalayaan Avenue Intersection and the construction of Lawton Avenue-Global City Viaduct.

The viaduct structure traversing Lawton Avenue up to the entrance of BGC is targeted for completion by the last quarter this year.

The BGC-Ortigas Center Link Road Project is one of the big-ticket projects under the Duterte administration’s Build, Build, Build program.

The DPWH aims to significantly complete its grand EDSA Decongestion Masterplan by 2022, which is composed of a network of infrastructure projects.

Villar previously said that every city in Metro Manila can be reached anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes.

“When the EDSA Decongestion Program is completed, we will be able to free up major thoroughfares by at least 120,000 vehicles. By 2022, every city in Metro Manila will be reachable within a 20- to 30-minute timeframe,” Villar said.

The decongestion program involves 14 roads and expressways spanning 121,850 meters amounting to P180.6 billion, and 11 bridges worth P42 billion spanning 9,348 meters.

It will decongest EDSA and other major roads in Metro Manila by as much as 55,000 vehicles per day.
