MANILA, Philippines — The annual Geminid meteor shower will be visible in the country starting today until Dec. 17, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Geminids will peak on the night of Dec. 13 until the early morning hours of the following day.

“Under a dark and cloudless sky and just after midnight of its peak activity, meteors or falling stars can be seen at an average rate of 40 or more meteors per hour,” PAGASA said.

Geminids “are very rocky and gritty and slightly easier to see compared to the other showers.”

Compared to other meteors, Geminids do not originate from a comet, PAGASA noted. They come from asteroid 3200 Phaethon.

The shower radiates from the constellation of Gemini, the weather bureau said.

Meteor showers can be seen with the naked eye.
