MANILA, Philippines — State weather bureau PAGASA has placed Batanes under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 as Tropical Storm Liwayway (international name: Lingling) heads north northwest over the Philippine Sea.
Winds between 30 kilometers per hour and 60 kph or intermittent rains may be expected over the province within 36 hours.
“Those living in [Batanes] are advised to take precautionary actions against potentially strong winds,” PAGASA said.
“Liwayway” was last spotted 320 km east northeast of Casiguran, Aurora with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gusts of up to 80 kph.
It is moving north northwest at 30 kph from the previous 25 kph.
“Liwayway” is not expected to hit any part of the Philippine landmass but it is seen to develop into a severe tropical storm within 48 hours.
It may leave the Philippine area of responsibility either on Wednesday or Thursday.
Wet week
Between Monday and Tuesday afternoon, residents of Cagayan (including Babuyan islands) and Batanes will experience light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains due to the effects of the tropical storm.
The southwest monsoon, meanwhile, will bring scattered light to moderate rains with at times heavy rainshowers over Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa and Western Visayas.
Between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon, light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains may be felt over Batanes and Babuyan Islands.
Scattered light to moderate with at times heavy rainshowers due to southwest monsoon may affect Ilocos region, Cordillera Administrative Region and Central Luzon.
PAGASA also warned that sea travel is risky over the seaboards of Luzon due to potentially rough sea conditions.
New LPA
Weather forecasters are also monitoring a new shallow low pressure area west of Central Luzon. The LPA was spotted 500 km west of Iba, Zambales.
PAGASA is not ruling out the weather disturbance’s possible development into a tropical depression.
