MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang yesterday mourned the death of veteran actor and director Eddie Garcia and praised him for his “immense” contribution to the film industry. ?

Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said the 90-year-old actor’s death was “a heartbreaking loss for the entertainment industry, which he dearly loved.” ?

“The Palace extends its deep condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, fans and loved ones of screen icon, as well as showbiz legend, Eddie Garcia, who died yesterday (Thursday) afternoon at the age of 90,” Panelo said in a statement. ?

“Manoy died with his boots on, in a manner of speaking, doing what he loved most – acting. As we pay tribute and give honor to his lifetime works, we pray to the Almighty to grant him eternal repose and that perpetual light may shine upon him,” he added. ?

Panelo said Garcia, popularly known as “Manoy” after one of his screen personas, left an “indelible mark” in the hearts and minds of Filipino moviegoers.?

“His immense contributions were nonpareil for he was the only Filipino inducted in three categories in the FAMAS Hall of Fame as Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Director by far,” he added.?Garcia, whose real name is Eduardo Verchez García, died last Thursday at the Makati Medical Center, 12 days after suffering a neck injury when he tripped and fell during a shooting for a television series of GMA Network. He fell into coma last June 8. ?

Vice President Leni Robredo also extended her condolences to the family of Garcia, whom she described as one of the pillars of the Philippine movie and TV industry. She said Garcia, a fellow Bicolano, made outstanding and incomparable contributions to the industry.

Senate President Vicente Sotto III said the chamber is going to honor Garcia for his invaluable contributions to the local movie industry and the country’s art and cultural scene in general. – With Helen Flores, Paolo Romero
